TL;DR

A 40-point checklist covering the five AEO dimensions that predict whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews will cite your brand: (1) technical access, (2) content structure, (3) schema coverage, (4) authority signals, (5) measurement. Work through it once for your top 10 pages, then audit quarterly. Pages that score 35+/40 are cited at roughly 3× the rate of pages scoring below 25.

AEO readiness is not a single score — it’s five dimensions. Most sites fail on two of them. Here’s the full 40-point checklist used by teams that consistently get cited in AI answers.

How to use this checklist

  1. Pick your 10 highest-priority pages (pillars + top traffic pages)
  2. Score each page against all 40 points — one point per checked item
  3. Pages < 25: fix the technical + schema dimensions first
  4. Pages 25–34: focus on content structure + authority signals
  5. Pages 35+: maintain with quarterly audits + freshness updates

Dimension 1 — Technical access (8 points)

If LLMs can’t crawl or extract your content, nothing else matters.

  • 1. robots.txt does NOT block GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended
  • 2. Site indexed in Bing (ChatGPT Search uses Bing’s index, not Google’s)
  • 3. No paywall or login gate on key content
  • 4. Core Web Vitals: LCP < 2.5s, INP < 200ms, CLS < 0.1 (75th percentile, mobile)
  • 5. HTML is the primary delivery method (not purely client-side React/JS rendered)
  • 6. Canonical URLs properly set — no duplicate content confusion
  • 7. Sitemap submitted in both GSC + Bing Webmaster Tools
  • 8. No aggressive anti-bot / Cloudflare challenges on key content pages

Dimension 2 — Content structure (10 points)

LLMs cite content they can extract cleanly. Extractability is the biggest content signal.

  • 9. Direct answer in first 100 words (72.4% of ChatGPT citations have this pattern)
  • 10. Question-based H2/H3 headings (match real buyer prompts)
  • 11. Self-contained 50–150 word chunks per subsection (cited 2.3× more)
  • 12. TL;DR / summary block at top of article
  • 13. Dedicated FAQ section with 5–10 Q&A
  • 14. Each FAQ answer is 40–80 words, self-contained
  • 15. Tables for comparison content (LLMs parse tables well)
  • 16. Numbered/bulleted lists for process/steps content
  • 17. Clear category/topic tagging in content
  • 18. No excessive fluff before the answer (under 30 words of intro max)

Dimension 3 — Schema coverage (8 points)

FAQPage schema alone doubles citation rate. Stack more types for compounding effect.

  • 19. Article schema with headline, datePublished, dateModified, author, publisher
  • 20. FAQPage schema matching the visible FAQ
  • 21. HowTo schema for procedural content (steps, totalTime)
  • 22. Dataset schema for downloadable assets (CSV, templates)
  • 23. Person schema for the author with sameAs pointing to LinkedIn/Twitter
  • 24. Organization schema for publisher
  • 25. BreadcrumbList schema
  • 26. Schema validates in Google Rich Results Test AND Schema.org validator (no errors)

Dimension 4 — Authority signals (8 points)

Brand authority correlates 0.334 with citation rate — the strongest single predictor.

  • 27. Domain Authority (DA) or Domain Rating (DR) ≥ 40
  • 28. Named author with verifiable credentials + photo
  • 29. Author bio links to LinkedIn, published work, social profiles
  • 30. Brand mentioned on 4+ platforms (Google, Bing, Reddit, Wikipedia, G2, industry blogs)
  • 31. Dedicated Wikipedia entry (single biggest AEO boost in our category study)
  • 32. Active Reddit presence (6.6% of Perplexity citations are Reddit)
  • 33. Cited by at least one DR 60+ third-party source
  • 34. Consistent NAP (name, address, phone) across the web if local business

Dimension 5 — Measurement + freshness (6 points)

AEO is a continuous cycle, not a one-time audit.

  • 35. Content updated within last 60 days (1.9× citation rate uplift)
  • 36. AEO monitoring tool active (CapstonAI, Profound, Peec, Otterly, or Brand Radar)
  • 37. 30+ buyer-intent prompts being tracked weekly
  • 38. AI mention rate baseline captured (aim for 15%+)
  • 39. AI share of voice tracked vs top 5 competitors
  • 40. Quarterly audit scheduled (reassess all 40 points, re-score)

Scoring guidance

Score Tier Priority action
0–18 Invisible Fix Dimensions 1 + 3 first (technical + schema) — these unlock everything else
19–24 Occasional citations Layer in Dimension 2 (content structure) — direct-answer rewrites on top 10 pages
25–34 Regular citations Build Dimension 4 (authority) — Wikipedia, Reddit, DR 60+ mentions
35+ Strong presence Focus on Dimension 5 (measurement) — quarterly audits + freshness cadence

Most pages start in the 10–18 range. A focused sprint on Dimensions 1 + 3 typically moves a page from 15 to 24 in a week. Then the content-structure work moves it to 30. Authority is the slow grind (3–6 months of digital PR + community presence).

Common failure patterns

The “we’re on page 1 of Google, why aren’t we in ChatGPT?” trap

Usually Dimension 3 (schema gap) + Dimension 2 (no direct-answer structure). SEO-optimized content is often not AEO-optimized. Fix the schema first, then rewrite the intro to answer the question in the first 100 words.

The “we have great content but no one cites us” trap

Almost always Dimension 4 (authority). Content quality doesn’t overcome low brand authority below the DA 40 threshold. You need third-party citations first — Wikipedia, Reddit, industry G2 / Capterra listings, podcast appearances.

The “we optimized everything and still don’t see results” trap

Usually Dimension 5 — no measurement. You can’t manage what you don’t measure. Run 30+ prompts weekly against ChatGPT / Perplexity / Gemini and track mention rate over 4+ weeks before concluding optimizations aren’t working.

Bottom line

40 points. 5 dimensions. Score your top 10 pages once, fix the dimension 1 + 3 items first, then layer in structure and authority. Re-audit every quarter.
