TL;DR

A 30-point AI Overviews optimization checklist covering 5 dimensions: (1) content structure, (2) schema + markup, (3) entity + authority, (4) freshness + updates, (5) measurement. Score your top 10 pages. Pages scoring 24+/30 appear in AI Overviews at ~3× the rate of pages below 18.

30 points. 5 dimensions. Run through the list for your top 10 pages, fix dimensions 1 + 2 first, then build dimensions 3 + 4 over 60–90 days. Here’s the checklist.

How to use this checklist

  1. Pick your 10 highest-priority pages (pillars + high-traffic pages)
  2. Score each page against all 30 points
  3. Pages < 18: fix Dimensions 1 + 2 (structure + schema) first
  4. Pages 18–23: layer Dimension 3 (authority)
  5. Pages 24+: maintain with Dimensions 4 + 5 (freshness + measurement)

Dimension 1 — Content structure (8 points)

Extractability is the strongest AI Overview ranking signal.

  • 1. Direct answer in the first 100 words (72.4% of cited pages follow this pattern)
  • 2. Question-based H2 and H3 headings matching real buyer queries
  • 3. Self-contained 50–150 word chunks per subsection
  • 4. Dedicated FAQ block with 5–10 Q&A
  • 5. Each FAQ answer 40–80 words, self-contained
  • 6. TL;DR / summary block at the top
  • 7. Tables for comparison content
  • 8. No excessive intro (under 30 words before the answer)

Dimension 2 — Schema markup (6 points)

  • 9. Article schema with headline, datePublished, dateModified, author, publisher
  • 10. FAQPage schema matching visible FAQ (5–10 Q&A)
  • 11. HowTo schema for procedural content
  • 12. Dataset schema for downloadable assets
  • 13. Validates in Google Rich Results Test with zero errors
  • 14. author.sameAs pointing to LinkedIn / author page / Wikipedia where relevant

Dimension 3 — Entity + authority signals (8 points)

AI Overviews weight multi-source authority much more heavily than traditional SEO.

  • 15. Domain Authority (DA) or Domain Rating (DR) ≥ 40
  • 16. Named author with verifiable credentials + photo
  • 17. Author bio page exists with author schema
  • 18. Brand mentioned on 4+ platforms (Google, Bing, Reddit, Wikipedia, G2)
  • 19. Wikipedia entry OR Wikidata entry (7.8% of AI Overview citations)
  • 20. Active Reddit presence in relevant subreddits
  • 21. Cited by at least one DR 60+ third-party source
  • 22. GSC verified in both Google AND Bing Webmaster Tools

Dimension 4 — Freshness + technical (5 points)

  • 23. Content updated within last 60 days (1.9× citation rate uplift)
  • 24. Visible “Updated YYYY-MM-DD” on page (not just in schema)
  • 25. dateModified in schema matches visible date
  • 26. Core Web Vitals: LCP < 2.5s, INP < 200ms, CLS < 0.1 (mobile)
  • 27. No Google-Extended block in robots.txt (optional, but blocking removes training data contribution)

Dimension 5 — Measurement (3 points)

  • 28. GSC Performance report checked monthly for CTR drops (AI Overview appearance proxy)
  • 29. At least 10 priority queries tracked for AI Overview appearance (Semrush AI Overview Checker, Ahrefs, or manual)
  • 30. Quarterly re-score of all 30 points

Scoring

Score Tier Priority action
0–12 Invisible Fix Dimension 1 + 2 (structure + schema) — unlocks eligibility
13–17 Occasional Layer in Dimension 3 (authority + entities)
18–23 Regular Focus on Dimensions 4 + 5 (freshness + measurement)
24+ Strong Maintain — quarterly audit + monthly refresh

Common failure patterns

“We’re ranking but not cited in the Overview”

Almost always Dimension 1 (content structure) gap. Page-1 ranking is necessary but not sufficient. If the content doesn’t have a direct answer in the first 100 words + question-based headings + FAQ schema, AI Overviews will pull from a lower-ranked page that does.

“We have great content but no one cites us”

Dimension 3 gap. Content quality doesn’t compensate for low brand authority below DA 40. Build Wikipedia / Reddit / G2 presence first.

“Our CTR crashed and we don’t know why”

AI Overview appeared on the query. Use GSC Performance Report: compare last 30 days vs previous 30 days. Look for queries where position held but CTR dropped — that’s the AI Overview signature. Fix: audit the affected page against this checklist and aim for 24+/30.

Bottom line

Score. Fix. Re-score. 30 points, 5 dimensions, quarterly cadence. Pages that reach 24+ are cited in AI Overviews at approximately 3× the rate of pages below 18.
